Other Data: Roll of Honour(de Ruvigny) Vol 2 Part 4, p12 (Portrait) :Youngest son of Henry Octavius Bickley, of Holme Lea, Lyme Regis, by his wife Jane Mary Ashford, d. of the late William Archer Ellis of Woodbury, Devon. Born Lyme Regis 6/9/1892;educ St Edwards Sch Oxford where he was Senior Prefect, and at Pembroke College, Cambridge where he was studying for the medical profession when war broke out. Commissioned Devon Regt 28/10/14;Lieut Oct 1915 and Capt in 237 Coy MGC in Sept 1917. Served BEF in F&F from Oct 1915. Invalided home May 1916 and on recovery transf. MGC. Ret France as 2 I/c 203 Coy in Feb 1917. Transf to 237 Coy Sept 1917 and KIA nr Ypres 4/10/17 while carrying out control duties in an advanced position. He was taking a message from an orderly when a large shell burst, killing him and two or three others standing nearby. Buried where he fell. His CO wrote " The Officers, NCOs and men of this Coy wish to convey to you their deep lament at losing your son as their CO". He was a fine rugby player having played at different times for Cambridge, Harelquins, Devon County and the Exeter Football clubs. Unmarried.
