Description

Dock and Harbour Engines (13 items).

Two 14 horse power independent engines, with 22 inch cylinders, 3 foot strokes, parallel motions, cast iron beams.

Reverse cross-section and plan of the engine house and boiler, longitudinal section of boiler, side view of engine; sketches of pump parts etc. by Abraham Storey and John Haden - 4 small sheets stuck together; coloured drawing of pumps, Oct. 1813, and coloured drawing of different pumps marked "Sheerness Dock Yard 8 Jul. 1815 (these drawings were cut from a larger sheet of pump drawings); reverse front view and section of pump; notes and sketch of the pump (this sheet also contains notes on the pumps at Pater Dockyard, Woolwich and Liverpool Docks, Apr. 1826). The reverse drawings bear letter codes.
Plans, transcripts etc. re work on the docks, Jul. 1812: coloured drawings of one of the brick masses used in the construction of the wharf wall, signed by William Heard; "Plan showing the situation of the Bases of the Brick Masses and the Soundings taken after the ground was dredged, previous to sinking them in their places Jun. 1811", signed by William Heard, Jul. 1812 and marked "No. 4"; set of transcripts marked "Sheerness Jul. 1812" - report to the Principal Officers & Commissioners of the Navy, 17 Jul. 1812 (the original was signed by Thomas B. Thompson, Henry Peake, Robert Barlow and William G. Lobb, and Joseph Huddart, James Watt and Josias Jessop who accompanied the Committee's inspection of the 6 Jul. 1812), "Copies of questions put by the Committee to Commissioner Bentham on 11 Jul. 1812 and of his answers thereto dated 13 Jul. 1812", transcript of letter from John Douglas, G. Parkin, T. Williams, E. Jessop and E. Shrubsole to the Committee, dated Sheerness Yard, 16 Jul. 1812, about the state of the dwelling houses; coloured "Plan proposed for the Repair and Improvement of His Majesty's Dock Yard at Sheerness by a Committee of the Navy Board assisted by Capt. Joseph Huddart, James Watt & Josias Jessop, 17 Jul. 1812"; "Estimate of the probable expense of the additions and alterations proposed to be made at the Royal Dockyard Sheerness", marked "Rennie & Whidbey"; coloured "Plan of His Majesty's Dockyard at Sheerness, on which is delineated the Works proposed for the Repair and Improvement thereof by a Committee of the Navy Board assisted by Messrs. Watt, Huddart and Jessop…" by John Rennie, 29 Mar. 1813.

For the Honourable the Commissioners of the Navy. Pumping engines, Sheerness Dockyard. These drawings only show one engine, but the two were identical.
