Description (What the record is about)
-
The location of the farm is that given on the lease, but where fields stretched into more than one parish, only the principal parish is field. The date listed is the date of the document; occasionally this was some months after the commencement of the term of the lease. The tenant's place of residence is listed only when different from the location of the farm. The name of the farm is rarely specified in the document; where it has been identified from other sources, it is given in square brackets. The amount is the annual rent; 'plus' indicates that there was an additional amount, being the price of a specified number of bushels of wheat and barley, according to a stipulated average.
Until about 1852, the leases are large parchment format; from about 1852 to 1872, they are manuscript on paper; after about 1872, printed forms were used.
The only lease listed later than 1883 is that for Holkham Model farm (Viscount Coke), 1903.
