Description

Regarding Tristram Hillier's portrait of the abbot at Downside Abbey, Clough's efforts to work and not slip into 'trivial and distracting art-works', difficulty of dealing with industrial objects in art, advising Carr not to focus too intently on line and form when painting, varieties of paint and other media which can be used, arrival of Lowry paintings, and quotation from an introduction to a Leger catalogue on 'men-at work' as opposed to 'man-shape'.
