Bartlow is an ancient parish, in the Archdeaconry and Diocese of Ely.
Bartlow Hamlet, also known as Stevington End or Bartlow End, which seems to have been separately administered for poor law matters in the 18th and early 19th centuries, lay within the parish of Bartlow, but in the County of Essex. It was created a separate parish for civil purposes in 1866 (29& 30 Vic c 113), and was included in Linton Poor Law Union, but became part of Saffron Walden (Essex) Rural District in 1894, and was amalgamated with Ashdon parish, in Essex, in 1946. Parts of the parish of Bartlow were exchanged with parts of Ashdon in 1965 (Statutory Instrument 1964/366). The Essex part of Bartlow ecclesiastical parish was transferred in 1914 from Chelmsford to Ely Diocese.
The living is a rectory. From 1939 - 1945 it was held in plurality with Shudy Camps, and from 1946 - 1972 it was held with Horseheath. From 1972, the rector was instituted to Bartlow and Linton, under a pastoral scheme. In 1999 (Diocesan Directory) the parish was served by the Linton Team Ministry, who have responsibility for the parishes of Bartlow, Castle Camps, Horseheath, Linton, and Shudy Camps
In 1836, the parish was incorporated (for poor law and related purposes) into the Linton Poor Law Union. The civil (non-ecclesiastical) affairs of the parish have been separately governed since 1894.
