Administrative / biographical background

The canons of 1603 (E. Gibson, Codex Iuris Ecclesiastici (Oxford, 1761), pp.314-316) required the authorities, before granting a licence, to demand the oaths of two sufficient persons as to the consent of the parents and the absence of impediment to the marriage. By the Marriage Act of 1753, 26 Geo.II, c.33, one of these had to be a party to the marriage.
