John Howell, private in the Sussex Regiment of Militia stationed at Brighton; was born at Newhaven and on 5th May 1803 was apprenticed for three years to Thomas Whiteman of Lewes All Saints, tailor; served two years when the agreement was dissolved by mutual consent when he established himself in business by hiring the house of William Knight at £6 10s per annum; after four years he moved to London and worked as a journeyman, then to Maidstone in Kent for five months until he returned to Newhaven and re-hired the same house as before; has a wife Sarah and children John (4) and Sarah Ann (18 months)
