Administrative / biographical background

The firm was founded by Joseph Webb of Staffordshire, who established a small rolling mill in Elton c.1846: a forge was added later. Principal customers were local textile machinery manufacturers. Joseph was succeeded in the business by his sons Henry and George, and their sons, the last of whom, William Webb, died in 1970. In addition to the forge, a stock warehouse was maintained in Knowsley Street, later moved adjacent to the forge at Bury bridge, and in 1956, a new constructional engineering works was added, replacing the rolling mill which closed in 1923. The firm closed in 1974.
