They were donated to the Library in August 1987 his grand-daughter, Mrs. Sydney Anne Miller of Goshen, New York.

Administrative / biographical background

The Legion of Frontiersmen was planned by Roger Pocock, novelist and frontiersman, who became its Hon. Sec., and inaugurated on 10 April 1905 by the Earl of Lonsdale, who became its Chairman. It comprised of ex-servicemen, explorers, engineers and others familiar with the frontiers of the Empire, to be a civilian body to promote the interests of the Empire in times of peace, and aid conventional forces in time of war.

The following papers belonged to Dr. J. Garland Long, who was Honarary Organising Officer for the Manchester Command, July 1906, Commandant for Lancashire and Cheshire later in 1906, Commissioner for the Australian Commonwealth 1907, Commandant for the North Staffordshire Command, 1907.
