Memoranda of convictions, general

Offences concerned are : selling ale or cider without a licence (4 files); profane swearing (4 files); stealing turnips and potatoes; stealing wood and trees; having custody of stolen iron; embezzling or receiving woollen cloth, collecting ends of yarn, etc; use of carts with more horses than allowed on turnpike roads; offences under game laws. The main series is chronological and miscellaneous. Particulars generally given are date, name, parish, and occupation of person complaining or owner of property, names of informers (in case of unlicensed alehouses usually excise officers), brief particulars of offence and where committed, signature(s) of convicting justice(s). The numerous game law convictions are often lengthy, with recital of depositions and details of poaching equipment. The file for Michs. 1782 contains a number of depositions apparently unrelated to the convictions. From 1823 memoranda of convictions are on a printed form stating that they were at petty sessions.
