Gallantry Notes: MC:For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a battery of machine guns under very adverse conditions during six days' operations. At very short notice, he brought a barrage to bear on a large number of enemy, massing for a counter attack.
Citation from War Diary: "for gallantry in command of a machine gun battery in the face of heavy hostile artillery fire. On 12th October the 51st Brigade made a successful attack and on the following day the enemy made a strong counter attack astride the Ypres-Staden railway. This attack was broken up with heavy casualties by our machine gun and artillery fire. The testimony of German prisoners to the effect that our machine gun fire was impassable immediately north of the railway (where this particular barrage came down)proved the efficiency of the fire of the guns under this officer's control, conducted under extremely difficult conditions and casualties.This officer's example throughout was inspiring and instilled the spirit of courage and endurance into the men under his command";
