Later re-named Gloucester Churches Together, Churches Together in England was set up in 1990 to encourage more unity and ecumenical activity. At the same time the British Council of Churches was replaced by the Council of Churches for Britain and Ireland with four new national bodies. Gloucester Churches Together was formed in September 1990 as the successor to Gloucester Council of Churches. It is an interdenominational organisation established to build closer relationships between churches in the city and to foster Christian unity. It has a formal constitution and officers who are elected annually, usually two representatives from each church. Mr Heavisides became a member of Gloucester Churches Together Executive Committee in 1993 and was its chairman from October 1998 until October 2000. John Chambers is the present chairman.
