Newton Chambers Ltd, ironfounders and chemical manufacturers, of Thorncliffe Works, Chapeltown. (Deposited 1975). Including:
A large and fairly comprehensive archive relating to the ironworks and collieries 1776-1920s (some to 1964), to the "Tommy shop" run by the firm and some to the Izal works. Iron works day-books, purchase books, order books and sales ledgers, stock books from 1793-1880s.
Partners' private ledgers, accounts (various), balance sheets 1805-c1918, minutes of directors' meetings 1831-1953.
Correspondence (extensive): Chambers' correspondence 1797-1846; ironworks letter books 1825-1831; business letter books 1866-1891; Newton family correspondence from 1761-1870s; London agent's letters 1809-1847; correspondence relating to gas projects (to whom the firm supplied pipes 1794-1846 (concerns a large number of gas companies all over the country); a quantity of general correspondence c1793-1846.
Partnership deeds and colliery leases 1793-1920.
Collieries: Thorncliffe, Mortomley and Hoyland Silkstone, various records; Thorncliffe Coal Distillation Co. records, 1881-1964.
Shop records: purchase books, letters and vouchers, stock books 1801-1842; reckoning books, of goods sold to various categories of workers and to the partners 1801-1844.
Izal works: patents 1893-1942; production and distribution papers from 1893; trading accounts, letter books 1911-1924; sales representatives' letters, accounts, etc. from 1911; trading data 1882-1942.
