Description (What the record is about)
-
The majority of this correspondence is a sequence of letters written by Joseph Douglas Strutt immediately before and during his tour to Europe in 1820 and 1821. Several of these letters were written from London where he attended the divorce trial of Queen Caroline at the House of Lords, and contain accounts of the proceedings and the related unrest in the city. The letters from Europe contain the usual accounts of sightseeing and social activities but those from Rome and Naples also contain detailed information about the revolution in Naples and its occupation by the Austrian army. Later letters from Malta give accounts of events following Greece's revolt against Turkey. The last letters were writen from Smyrna, just before his death at Constantinople in August 1821. This section also contains two earlier letters, one dating from his childhood, and the second from his time at college in Edinburgh.
