Title (The name of the record)
- Letter from John [Watson], Bishop of Winchester, St Cross, to Sir William More and Sir Thomas Browne. There was some delay before he received the enclosed letters [not present] from the Privy Council 'touching the examination of those that are fallen into the heresy termed the Family of Love'. He had intended to confer with More before Christmas on his way to London, but was prevented by ill health, and now sends copies of the letters to More and Browne and asks them, 'with the assistance of such godly and learned preachers', to take action as required. He also asks them to send him the certificate required by the Council's other letters of the names of those 'as are relapsed or continue obstinate in matters of religion', based on the presentments received from Mr D Lewyn. The Bishop has heard there are few such in Surrey: 'I would we might say so much for Hampshire'. [HMC p.635a]
