In May 1908 the Houses of Convocation of Canterbury and York passed a resolution whereby the United Boards of Mission (see collection UBM) were constituted as the Central Boards of Mission of the Church of England, and given clearly defined functions, powers and co-option and self-government. Those functions were stated as follows: 1. To impress upon all members of the Church in such ways as from time to time may seem desirable, their responsibility as to Foreign Missions, and to set forth the principles which ought to govern the Missionary work of the Church. 2. To issue reports from time to time on the spiritual wants of heathen countries, and to direct attention to the opening providentially placed. 3. To give counsel when applied to by any Colonial or Missionary Church. 4. To act as referee on questions which Missionary Societies may desire to refer to the Board. 5. To collect and tabulate, as far as be found desirable and practicable, as Acts and Canons passed in the various Synods of the Church at home and abroad. 6. To undertake any other work in connection with Missions which may from time to time be entrusted to the Board either by the Archbishops, or by the Convocations of Canterbury or York. In 1921 Missionary Council of the Church Assembly was established to take the place of the Central Board.
