Mr. Slater was born in Collyhurst in 1905, one of 9 children. His father was killed in World War I. He started work at 14 on the railways at Oldham Road Station as a cart-boy. He was made redundant in 1923. In 1925 he managed to get work on the railways again but in 1928 he was put on a day to day basis. This lasted until 1931 when he was made semi-manent again. From 1951 he was a part-time branch secretary of the N.U.R. For fuller detail see the accompanying sheet written by Mr. Slater and the tape.
