The collection was given to the Chester City Record Office by Mr. J. Parry, Chester on 11 March and 27 May 1976.

Administrative / biographical background

These businesses are said to have originated in a foundry established in Crook Street by a Mr. Parry in 1720. In the early nineteenth century a descendant of the founder, William Parry, ran the Crook Street foundry (see CR 210/3). In 1837, a steam and mechanical engineering works was opened in Princess Street (see CR 210/1). Between 1855 and 1876 the Crook Street foundry was run by John Taylor (see CR 210/3). It was later claimed that Samuel Taylor Parry provided the first electric street lighting in Chester in 1895 (see CR 210/6). The business closed in the early 1950s.
