Document - 6 Bn War Diary: Written by Lt Col JB Rosher Commanding 6 Bn MGC 12/7/1918 "The attention of all ranks is called to the very gallant action of the late Sergt Slater. After the attack by the 11th Essex on Scottish Wood on May 27th (1918) the enemy rushed the flanks and our troops retired, leaving, it was thought, two machine guns in enemy hands. Sergt Slater was reported missing. A Patrol of the Essex 2 or 3 days ago found the body of Sergt Slater lying beside his Vickers gun. He had apparently fought his gun to the last in spite of the retirement of the others. This is a magnificent example to all Machine Gunners, and one, which if followed by all would make a successful enemy attack impossible."MH106 - 2GH Havre, July 1916 - gsw l hip, aged 26;
Other Notes: SLATER, Serjeant, JOHN, 18051. 6th Coy. Machine Gun Corps (Inf). 29th May 1918. Age 25. Son of Mr. A. Slater, of 44, Albert St., Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, and the late Mrs. M. Slater. Panel 154 to 159 and 163A. Tyne Cot Memorial - Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
