Letter of Samuel Elvis, Worshipful Master, Woodbridge to Robert Leslie sending William Ballingtyne [William Ballantine] to collect membership certificates for several members in order that they can seek a travelling warrant for establishing a new lodge in the Berwickshire Militia regiment. Members requiring certificates are James Ballantyne [Ballantine], armorer, John Wallace, adjutant's clerk, William Gillies, private, George Liddle, Sergeant, John Wright, private, James Dunn, private, John Walker, private and William Ballantyne [Ballantine], watchmaker, 11 Upper East Smithfield, London. Endorsed with post script from Samuel Elvis seeking a membership certificate for Daniel Pierce, mess master, Dumfries Regiment of Militia.

Administrative / biographical background

Prince Edwin's Lodge was established in 1804 and met at the White Hart Inn, Thorofare, Woodbridge. It was granted a warrant by the Antients' Grand Lodge to meet as No. 249(B) on 21 May 1804 and was known as Prince Edwin's Lodge from 1806. In 1812 the Lodge moved to the Horse and Groom, Melton Street, Melton and in 1818 the Lodge moved to the White Lion Inn, Broad Street, Eye. In 1814 after the Antients' Grand Lodge joined in a union with the Moderns' Grand Lodge to form the United Grand Lodge of England, the Lodge met as No. 315. In 1832 the Lodge was renumbered to meet as No. 222. The Lodge ceased to be viable and was erased on 5 September 1838.
