Edwin Foden and Son commenced production of stationary engines for agricultural use at their foundry in Elworth near Sandbach in 1876. In 1902 Fodens Ltd was formed. The company soon became a leading manufacturer of steam wagons and later diesel trucks. Fodens was taken over by Sandbach Engineering Co in 1981 [C P Kennett, The Foden Story, (Patrick Stephens Ltd), 1978]
