Administrative / biographical background

The registration of gamekeepers began as the result of an Act of 1710, (9 Anne, c.27) which allowed lords of manors to appoint one gamekeeper for each manor and enter the appointment, or 'deputation' with the clerk of the peace. No register for the West Riding survives before 1803. Entries are in date order, and give the name of the lord of the manor, the manor for which the deputation is being made, and the name of the gamekeeper.
