Description (What the record is about)
-
Registers of documents lodged in connection with deceased estates of home and overseas servants of the East India Company/Government of India, and their dependants, who died in the UK/Europe while in receipt of salary, leave pay or pension. The series is not 100% complete. The majority of entries relate to persons whose estates were dealt with by the English High Court. The first two volumes give the name of the deceased, the names of the executors/administrators and the date of the grant of probate or administration. Dates of death are given from c1833 and the amount of the estate from c1836. From 1866 the type of salary, pay or pension is stated. The address at death (not always the same as the home address) is recorded from 1912 (Vol 5) onwards. The registers extend in date to 1974 but the last date of death actually recorded is 2 Nov 1972. The arrangement is alphabetical. The series is principally of use to researchers from two points of view. First, it provides a quick way of discovering a date of death which might otherwise only be found by working through an extensive and sometimes complicated series of pay books. Secondly, it also provides details of UK resident's financial status at death, information which is not normally available elsewhere in India Office Records.
