Maroon half-leather album, 395x485mm, containing mounted prints with letterpress captions and some additional handwritten notes; the title, Photographs—India. Colonel J. C. Ardagh, CB, RE, stamped in gold on the front cover. The album covers a range of subjects including architectural and topographical views in Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Sikandra, Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Benares, Alwar, Ajmer, Barwa Sagar, Jaipur, Gwalior, Dig, Bhopal, Indore, Udaipur, Datia, Sanchi, Mau, Orchha, Landi Kotal, Quetta, Sukkur, Himalayas, Kangra, Simla and Calcutta. There are also several portraits and groups with the Viceroy, the Marquess of Lansdowne and his staff, including Colonel Ardagh. Major-General Sir John Charles Ardagh (1840—1907) entered the Royal Engineers in 1859 and later served as Private Secretary to Lords Lansdowne and Lord Elgin.
