Description

Robert Charlesworth at Halifax to Sir G.S.

Mr. Royds and Mr. Waterhouse have just acquainted him that Selby Canal business is over, consultations on best method to get old River Navigation on proper footing as they suppose undertakers will proceed immediately with bill, asked him to lay matter before Savile for benefit of his directions and commands Mr. Waterhouse also brought petition prepared for Parliament from woollen linen merchants "which the petitioners are desirous of putting into the hands of Sir George Savile whom they consider not only as their representative in general but look up to as the patron of this Countrey in particular ... otherwise they must send it to a Committee of Merchants in London who have the care of that business ..."; with copy petition of exporters and manufacturers of cloth and other woollen goods at Halifax against an additional duty on foreign linens; also copy of Sir G.S. answer to Mr. Charlesworth re above navigation - "Soon after you wrote your letter you would learn the issue of the Selby Canal affair in the House of Commons by which that House's sense is fully declared that the amendment of the Old river is the proper object to have in view under such regulations as are fit for the public to require and the undertakers to accept ..."; enlarges on conflict in interest between proprietors of upper and lower Calder and Hebble rivers.
