For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during three days' heavy hostile shelling. He successfully got his gun into position and inflicted considerable casualties upon the enemy before being ordered to withdraw. He captured three prisoners and a machine gun, and was seriously wounded on the fourth day, having inspired his men greatly by his gallant conduct throughout the operations.;
