Folio 163. Letter from Walter May Barton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union, to the Local Government Board. He writes concerning Stimpson Barrett, aged 34, an able bodied labourer, earning 12s per peek. He has been recently widowed and has 5 children under 4 with twins of 1 month. He has been unable to procure a housekeeper willing to look after the twins and has approached this board to receive the twins into the workhouse with him being willing to contribute 2s per week towards their support. The board wish to comply with his request but have never before granted similar relief and therefore seek advice and an opinion on the matter from the Local Government Board. As the application will be received next Monday they would appreciate an early reply.
Annotated: This proposal is in accordance with the Westhampnett precedent'.
Annotated; 'Mr Lockwood. States that the Board will be prepared to assent to the proposal; for a limited period say 6 months', 25 March 1885.
