Description (What the record is about)
-
An order in council for the creation of the parish of Ripe with Chalvington by the union of the two ancient parishes was passed in January 1922 and came into effect on the death of the Revd G G McElroy, rector of Chalvington, in 1952. For legal purposes St John the Baptist at Ripe was assigned as the parish church though functions were shared equally with St Bartholomew, Chalvington. In October 1976 the parish was united with that of Laughton, previously held with Chiddingly, to form the benefice of Laughton with Ripe and Chalvington. The two parishes remained distinct.
