Gallantry Notes: MC:For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in covering the retirement of other troops by controlling the fire of his guns with absolute fearlessness from the roof of a house which was the object of concentrated artillery and machine gun fire. His steadfast endurance and fixed determination in the face of the enemy inspiredconfidence in his men, and he was largely instrumental in holding up the enemy's advance for a period of twenty-three hours.
Bar to MC: for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a rearguard action. He collected isolated infantry anf got them into line and manned four guns. With this small force he held up the enemy for over an hour under very heavy machine gun fire and then withdrew to a series of positions in the rear. Having given transport ands ambulance time to clear he sent his men back and covered their withdrawal with a revolver. He then contrived to get back himself.
