Administrative / biographical background

The Cheshire Regiment was formed in 1689. Originally, it was known by the names of its successive Colonels, but later became The 22nd Regiment of Foot, and from 1782 The Cheshire Regiment. The Regiment's first campaign was in Ireland, where it was retained for garrison duties for the remainder of the 17th century, with the exception of a brief time in the Netherlands. During the 18th century, the Regiment served in Jamaica, Minorca, Canada, the West Indies, America and South Africa, and during the 18th century in India (most notably in Scinde), Mauritius, Burma and South Africa. Latterly, the regiment has seen a great deal of action in both world wars. Further information on the history of the Regiment is available on the regimental website at www.cheshireregiment.org
