The donor was born in Cumberland, where most of these photographs were taken parents, James and Sarah Jane Edgar, kept a pub, the Elephant Inn in Southwaite, Cumberland. She married John Boyd in 1902. He was a chauffeur-cum-gardener-cum handyman on the Cowan estate of Dalston, Cumberland. After the death of Mrs. Cowan, the Boyd family moved to Lancashire on a recommendation where John Boyd took a gardening job. Soon afterwards, however, he left this and the family moved down to Salford to work and live in at a doctor's surgery.
