8 Since Roger Twysden, esq., sheriff of the county, on the last day of July, 1600, by virtue of a writ of capias utlaget against John Whitlock of Lynsted, yeoman, at the suit of William Crayford, esq., directed to the sheriff and returnable before the Queen's Justices at Westminster on the morrow [?] All Souls next, issued a warrant to Stephen Stenyngs, bailiff, for the arrest of John Whitlock, who by virtue of the warrant on 5th August, 1600, at Lynsted arrested John Whitlock and took him into custody. Later, the same day William Harris of Teynham, gentleman, John Symons of Teynham, clerk, and Hugh Willyams of Lynsted, husbandman, assaulted Stephen Stenyngs and rescued John Whitlock and took him from the custody of the bailiff so that John Whitlock has remained at large.

[In margin] John Symons appeared 21st [?] April, 1601, and submitted to the favour of the court. His fine fixed by the justices at £4 [? of which 40s. to be paid before Michaelmas next]. Memorandum that 40s. was remitted by the court of Queen's Bench to 5s.

Paid 5s. in court.

9 Thomas Blanche of Raynham, victualler, from 1st June to 20th September, 1600, without authority, kept "a comon typlinge house" and sold "ale and beere".

[In margin] Denied the indictment April, 1601.

10 Samuel Lomas, of Bexley, tailor, on 17th August, 1600, at Bexley, assaulted John Abrell and struck him on the head with a staff and wounded his head.

[In margin] He appeared at the session of the peace held here on 21st April, [1601] and acknowledged the indictment and submitted himself and his fine assessed at 2s. 6d.

11 Thomas Hale of Yalding, yeoman, and Stephen Ferris of the same, labourer, on 6th September, 1600, assaulted Elizabeth Barefoot of Yalding, widow, at Yalding, and wounded her.

[In margin] Acknowledged the indictment and submitted themselves [to the court]. Their fine assessed in court at 6d.

12 Thomas Hugget of Horsmonden, clothier, on 1st December, 1599, at Horsmonden, caused 40 lbs of white wool worth 40s. to be dyed with wood called "logwood alias Blockwood" a green colour and also on 24th September, 1600, at Horsmonden caused 30 lbs. of white wool worth 30s. to be dyed in the same way.

[In margin] Discharged, since pardoned.

13 The highway leading from Parrocke Gate to Yalding Leas, being in the parishes of [East] Peckham, Brenchley, Yalding and Nettlestead, through much use has been in a bad state of repair during the last three months. The highway ought to be repaired by the inhabitants of the parishes of [East] Peckham, Brenchley, Yalding and Nettlestead and they have not repaired the highway during the last "somertyme" as they ought according to the statute.

[In margin] 3rd April, 1603, the inhabitants of Brenchley appeared and the inhabitants of Yalding, and Thomas Hale and Richard Ducke of Peckham. Respited until St. Peter ad Vincula [1st August] for the repair of the said highway. And if not repaired and certified to the Session here then, to pay the penalty in the statute etc. To which next session at Maidstone, Richard Ducke and George Pattenden of East Peckham affirm that the part of the same highway in the same has been repaired enough and William Dunne for Brenchley the same and Henry Goslyng for Nettlestead the same.

14 The inhabitants of Aylesford for the same offence for the bad state of repair of the road leading from Millhalle to Aylesford and being in the parish of Aylesford.

15 The inhabitants of Aylesford and Allington for the same offence for the bad state of repair of the road called Hermitage Lane in the said parishes.

16 Salamon Ware of Horsmonden, yeoman, on 20th August, 1600, at Horsmonden encroached on part of the highway leading from Tonbridge to Cranbrook and dug "a sawpitt", collected "a dungmascen" and placed six large "tymber loggs" there, extending five perches in length and one perch in breadth, which encroachment has continued.

[In margin] The fine assessed by the justices at 6d. and the nuisance to be removed before the feast of All Saints [1st November] on pain of 40s.

17 John Moyce of Wateringbury, labourer, 1st September, 1600, at Wateringbury, broke and entered into "a gardner" of Richard Wylkynson, gent., and stole "two quarters of wheate" worth 40s. between 1 a. m. and 12 noon.

Therefore writ of capias

18 Thomas Mere and Thomas Griffyn, both of West Malling, shoemakers, 1st September, 1600, stole a pig worth 10d. belonging to John Clamparde of West Malling, tailor, being at West Malling. Meere convicted. Griffyn at large. Therefore process to be made.
