Title

Madura. The Great Pagoda [Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple]. Carved pillar in the Thousand Pillar Portico [Airakkal Mandapa]. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David.

Date

1867-1868

Description

Genre: Architectural Photography. Close view of a pillar, carved in the form of a rider on a rearing horse, in the Airakkal Mandapa of the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '309 - an Equestrian Statue at the left of the entrance. It is said, with every appearance of probability, to be intended as a representation of Ayanatha Muthaliar, the builder of the portico. The next four views, are pillars in the second row. They appear to be larger than those in the front row, but are not so in reality; owing however to their position, they could only be taken quite close, thus causing them to appear larger than they are.'
