The Wells and Fakenham Railway, authorised by Act of Parliament in 1854, was built to link the port of Wells-next-the-Sea with the Fakenham terminus of the Dereham and Fakenham Railway. The line was about 9½ miles long and opened in 1857. An extension to the quay at Wells was built two years later. The 2nd Earl of Leicester was the largest shareholder; his estate agent, H.W.Keary, was also a director. The line was worked by the Eastern Counties Railway, but the companies remained independent until both were amalgamated with the Great Eastern Railway in 1862.
