SION COLLEGE LIBRARY CATALOGUE

A copy of the printed catalogue of Sion College Library by its Librarian John Spencer (d. 1680): 'Catalogus universalis librorum omnium in bibliotheca Collegii Sionii apud Londinenses ... per J.S. bibliothecarium ...' (London, 1650). On the title page John Spencer has written, after the Fire of London, 'Non sic nunc ut olim'. The second section, with a separate title page, 'catalogus interpretum S.S. Scripturae...' (London, 1650) has annotations in the hand of John Spencer recording additions to the Library after 1650 and before the Fire of London in 1666. Pasted on the inner front cover is a printed notice to readers in Sion College, beginning: 'Lege et Observa. Bibliothecae hujus libertate gaudere...'. This indicates that new readers (other than clergy of London) must subscribe to the Library rules and pay 2s 6d to the Librarian and 6d to the Library. This is followed by a printed leaf stating rules for conduct in the Library, dated 1650: 'De admissis ad studendum in Bibliotheca'. On the next leaf John Spencer has written the opening hours of the Library: 'De statis horis studendi'.
