The Artists' League of Great Britain was founded in 1909 as The Imperial Arts League. Its purpose was to "protect and promote the interests of Artists and to inform, advise and assist Artists, who have enrolled as members, in matters of business connected with the practice of the Arts". These 'business matters' included copyright, contracts, Reproduction Rights, Export Problems and Insurance.
The League was directed by a Council of experienced Artists who gave their services on a voluntary basis.
In 1971 the Imperial Arts League changed its name to The Artists' League of Great Britain.
