In 1710 the Reverend Edward Turner established a charity school in Cam which was to be supported by local voluntary subscriptions. The school received aid from The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge but struggled to win local financial support. In 1730, a local lady, presumed to be Frances Hopton, incorporated into her will an endowment to maintain the existing school, thereby making it independent of the need for voluntary donations. The endowment was created with certain conditions, for example, the master and mistress of the school had to be members of the Church of England and thus the children [boys and girls] should be educated in the ways of the church. The generous provision made by Frances Hopton became known as 'The Hopton Trust'. The school is now an Aided Church of England school, but the income from the 'Hopton Trust' continues to support it and is used to provide scholarships and the maintenance and extension of school buildings
