Description

Shah Jahan (1628-57). Mughal, c.1700. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Numbered 3 in Persian inventory note. Gouache with gold; mounted within the text-space of the left half of a double-page heading of a 16th century Persian manuscript, illuminated in colours and gold with blue predominating. 39 by 31 mm; page 382 by 245 mm. Shah Jahan, middle-aged, is shown head and shoulders facing left, with a gold halo, and wearing a fur-collared gold coat and a plumed turban.
