Description (What the record is about)
-
The bishop normally held a visitation of his diocese triennially, although the real task of personal inspection of each church devolved on the archdeacon, who usually visited his archdeaconry once a year. During visitations all inferior jurisdictions were inhibited, although for convenience this inhibition was often relaxed. Consequently the papers here include the Dean of Chichester's Peculiar (and, in the case of metropolitical visitations, the Archbishop's Peculiars), and are mostly concerned with citations to appear, as follows (all except the mandates from the Archdeacon of Chichester relate to episcopal or metropolitical visitations only). Metropolitical visitations are indicated.
