Administrative / biographical background

Mrs. Cicelia Spiewak was born in Glasgow. Her parents Maurice and Minnie (nee Harris) were married c.1918/19. Minnie Harris came from Townly Street, Manchester. Maurice Rachkind was born in 1882 in Russia, coming to this country at the age of 15 with his cousin whose surname was also Rachkind. This cousin had a butcher's shop in Bury New Road, Manchester. Maurice Rachkind settled in Glasgow, where he was a master butcher and had a shop in the Gorbals area. The family lived in South Portland Street. Maurice was a founder of the Chevra Kaddisha in Buchan Street. Maurice's brothers and sisters were:-

Israel Rachkind lived in Abbotsford Place with his wife Mary (she is now 100). Mary was born in Riga and came to this country at the age of 15 with her brother Morris Hyman, an auctioneer; she helped him in his business.

Polly Rachkind died 8 or 9 years ago in her late 70's. She was married to Sender Fry, a tailor, and they lived in Glasgow. They had the following children:- BENNY who died in his early 40's; JACK aged about 58 now; RACHEL and ZELDA (who is about 55).

Molly Rachkind (married name not known) lived in the Queen's Park area of Glasgow. Peter and Daniel are the names of 2 of her sons and there was another son who died in a fire.

Fanny Rachkind also married and had children but no details are known.

Cicelia Rachkind (now Mrs. Spiewak) was one of 10 children. She has sisters Rebecca and Bertha and a brother Samuel living in Glasgow, also 3 brothers, Yitzchak, Reuben and Zvi living in Israel. She had 2 sisters Emma and Etty, now deceased and a brother Sydney who died on March 20th 1940 fighting with the British army in Dunkirk. He was the first Jewish soldier from Scotland to be killed in the Second World War.

Cicelia Spiewak came to Manchester in 1947. Her husband Gershon Spiewak was born in Poland and came to this country as a refugee. Mr. Spiewak was a cantor at the Bishop Street Synagogue 1962-64. For the past 10 years he has been a cantor at the United Synagogue, Meade Hill Road, Prestwich. Mr. and Mrs. Spiewak are emigrating to Israel to join their children.
