Administrative / biographical background

Sports events are said to have been held on the Flan Field at Ulverston since 1834 or 1835. A new committee was established in 1929, to organise an annual athletics meeting, which was held each year in early August at Mansriggs. The committee decided to disband in 1966, after losing money in several previous years, and its affairs were subsequently wound up, although a sub-committee was formed into a new committee for continuing the hound-trailing events.
