Description (What the record is about)
-
These are the records of payments, other than augmentations, made by the Trustees. With the maintenance of the clergy the Trustees inherited the responsibility of paying almsmen, schoolmasters, the Poor Knights of Windsor (The Manuscripts of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, ed J.N. Dalton, Windsor, 1957, pp xviii, 72-75), various cathedral officers, and other members of ecclesiastical and charitable foundations. In these volumes are also recorded the orders for the payment of salaries and incidental charges which were incurred during the daily administration of the Trustees. These include payments to messengers and auditors, to John Phelps Clerk to the Trustees, and to Thomas Hobson and Thomas Pury, the copyists who wrote out the parochial surveys. The first two volumes (COMM/9/1-2) consist of orders for payment, usually addressed to Lawrence Steele, Treasurer to the Trustees, which were registered as they were issued.
