6th Feb. 1855. Letter from the Treasury to the Mayor re payment of expences in Criminal Prosecutions for the half-year ended 30 June 1854.

10th Jan. 1855. Blake, Tylee & Tylee from the Strand, to John Walker, re liability of part of Balcon Estate to pay Watch Rate.

3rd Feb. 1855. Letter from the Home Office, to the Town Clerk, asking for a general statement of the income and expences of the Council for the year (August) 1854.

6th Feb. 1855. Chester, Toulin & Chester from Staple Inn, to John Walker, re the Taxing Master's certificate for Mr. Maddock.

12th Feb. 1855. Circular letter from the Town Clerk of Manchester, suggesting the importance of the Council adopting a petition to Parliament praying that the recommendations of the Shipping Dues Commission may be carried into effect without delay; and that in the meantime no Private Bill may be allowed to pass at the instance of the Corporation of Liverpool, unless such clauses are introduced as will prevent the Town Dues being in any way directly or indirectly affected. With draft of reply on behalf of the Mayor of Chester stating that he considers it is not expedient that the Town Council of this City should interfere in the question at issue. With, attached:-

24th Feb. 1855. Draft minutes of a Public Meeting of the inhabitants of the City of Chester, held at the Exchange for a Poor Relief Fund. Signed: John Walker, Deputy Town Clerk. With notes of motions, etc., attached. 86pp.

30th Feb. 1855. Quellyn Roberts from Eastgate Row, to Alderman Royle, asking him to present a requisition.

1st March 1855. Statement by John Smith to the Alderman and Assessors for Boughton Ward, that he is disqualified from serving as auditor or assessor for any ward in the City.

19th March 1855. Town Clerk of Leeds, printed circular letter, asking the Council to petition Parliament against the 34th section of a Bill to consolidate and amend the Nuisance Removal and Diseases Prevention Acts, 1848 & 1849.

n.d. Printed circular prepared and issued by order of the Anti-Central-Legislation Union of Manufacturers, Traders and others, for the Defence of Property and Enterprise, criticising the Public Health Bill, 1855.

12th April 1855. Printed letter and form from the Town Clerk of Stockport for details re Chester Police Force, which have been inserted.

April 1855. Copy Minute of a meeting of the Magistrates held at the City Gaol on 7th April 1855, for the Governor of the Gaol to be allowed his salary without any deduction for Income Tax: Addressed to John Walker, Deputy Town Clerk.

23rd April 1855. Letter from Solicitor's Dept., Treasury, to the Town Clerk, acknowledging receipt of the mortgage from the Borough of Chester to Higgings.

10th May 1855. W. Cowper from Whitehall to the Town Clerk, enclosing a resolution of the House of Commons of 26th April, and asking for a return of the number of prosecutions under various Acts, re the Municipal Police or Sanitary government, with reference to Smoke nuisance, etc.

11th May 1855. John Greenwood from the Treasury, to the Town Clerk, concerning the signing, by Lords of the Treasury who were not in office at the date of 26th April, of a deed from the Corporation of Chester to Brown.

12th May 1855. Letter from Solicitor's Office, Treasury, to the Town Clerk, acknowledging receipt of a conveyance from Borough of Chester to Street and Wigginer - also those to Jones, Brown & Taylor.

14th May 1855. Circular letter from Secretary of Foreign Affairs to the Mayor as to the issue of free passports to visit the Paris Exhibition.

14th May.1855. W.Stanley's letter from the House of Commons Library, stating that he is unable to find a bill this year printed of Mr. Adderley's although a Bill was passed last year on the subject - C.86 - Vic.17. 18.

16th May 1855. William Aston from Tarpoley, to John Walker sending Thomas Sheen's address.

21st May 1855. Henry Morgan, from Town Clerk's Office, Wakefield, to John Walker, Deputy Town Clerk, forwarding details (missing) concerning the Wakefield Fire Brigade.

21st July 1855. Richd. Cardwell, Archt. & C.E., from Wrekin Road, Wellington, Salop, to the Town Clerk, applying for the post of Surveyor of the City of Chester.

6th Aug,1855. Thos. Gerrard from Kingsley, to Jno. Walker, applying for the post of Surveyor.

7th Aug. 1855. John Meason from Liverpool, to the Chairman of Local Improvement Committee, applying for the post of Clerk of Works.

13th Aug. 1855. Return for the City and Borough of Chester as to practising solicitors being in the Commission of the Peace. Addressed to Mr. Thos. Hodson, Secretary to the Yorkshire Law Society, York.

14th Aug. 1855. Town Clerk, Shrewsbury, to the Town Clerk, Chester, asking for the numbers of cattle entering Chester Market for the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, for comparison.

17th Aug. 1855. Jno. Green from Leeds, enquiring re the advertised post of City Surveyor.

17th Aug. 1855. Tho. Bell, from Liverpool, to John Walker enquiring concerning the post of City Surveyor.

18th Aug. 1855. Francis Walmsley, from Arlington Terrace, .. Manchester, to John Walker, enquiring re the advertised post.

20th Aug. 1855. Circular from H.Waddington from Whitehall, to the Town Clerk, requesting a return of comparative population for the Borough.

26th Aug. 1855. Jno.Hill, Town Clerk, Worcester, to the Town Clerk, Chester, sending a list of queries re lighting the public lamps of the City - with replies.

28th Aug. 1855. Walter Alderson from London, to J.Walker. A covering letter for his testimonial re his application for post of Surveyor.

19th Sept.1855. Town Clerk, Shrewsbury, to Jas. Paul, to ascertain the number of officers required to carry out the Improvement Act.

21st Sept.1855. W.Foulkes from Ashfield, Wrexham, to Jno. Walker, concerning advertisement re revision of Parliamentary Registration.

17th Oct.1855. Town Clerk of Salford, to Jno. Walker, stating that the Cattle Market there is let on a lease with a variety of clauses. It has always been let by private contract.

6th Dec. 1855. Report by John Walker to the Law Committee. Having fully investigated relative to the public right of road from Hoole Lane Bridge past the Leadworks into Leadworks Lane, he is opinion that there never was an original right of road thro' the fields upon which the works now stand, and cannot discover such a usage of the road claimed as will justify the Town Council in litigating the matter.

6th Dec. 1855. Evidence re Leadworks Lane; including statements by Richard Kirkham of Boughton; Richard Davies of the City of Chester, architect; Riley Edwards of John Walker, gardener; Thomas Taylor of Boughton, gardener; and by John Chesworth, residing in Boughton. The last of these is signed John Chesworth. 5 pp.

1855. Chester Music Festival. List of signatures of persons agreeing to serve as a committee and to defray any deficiency The Festival to be held on Sept. 18,19 and 20 (if convenient) in aid of the Funds of the Public Charities of Chester. Wm. Henry Brown, Chairman. With two memoranda of receipts 7th May 1857 and 30th March 1857; signed John Hicklin.

25th May 1855. John Philpot from 20 Montague Street, Russell Square, to J. Bennett, Esq. re Broughton's Charity. The Master has decided to allow £109 for repair to the house at Isacoed and £50 for repairing the Wrexham School: £5 extra p.a. for books for the prisoners and £15 p.a. extra for the schoolmaster. With envelope.
