Not put in any assizes, juries or inquests (save those of the manor), unless they hold lands in chief in respect of which they ought to be put thereon according to the statutes in that case provided; and to have released upon them without delay any distress taken: these customs being due to the men and tenants of ancient demesne of the crown of England, and it appearing by a certificate transmitted by the Treasurer and Chamberlain of the Exchequer to the late Queen Elizabeth in her Chancery that the manor of Bosham is ancient demesne. (Ancient demesne is land shown as held by the crown in Domesday Book, which is an Exchequer record)
