Gallantry Notes: From "Gallantry Awards to 29 Bn MGC" - Meiklejohn: "on Aug 18th 1918, Pte Newman was acting as a runner to the mobile section which went forward in the attack on Outtersteene. After the taking of the last objective he found his way back to CHQ to report the final disposition of the guns in spite of a very heavy hostile bombardment. In the meantime his officer had become a casualty, and he took up another Officer, explained the disposition of the guns and took him round all the positions. This was at a time when the enemy was trying to stop our consolidation by means of an intense bombardment. Later he came back through this barrage for more belt boxes, and again later guided the ration party up under heavy shell fire. His energy, bravery and grip of the situation were most conspicuous and cannot be too highly commended.";
