The Kent River Authority was established in 1964 under the terms of the Water Resources Act 1963 as the successor to the Kent River Board. The Authority was abolished in 1974 when responsibility for both rivers and water supply passed to the new unitary water authorities. Administration was again divided in 1989 when responsibility for rivers passed to the National Rivers Authority.
