Administrative / biographical background

Eric Williams, a resident of Hook Norton, Oxfordshire, seems to have originally enlisted in the General Service Corps, leaving the UK in October 1943 for India. He became a Lance Corporal and groom with the 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment (20th INDIAN Division), and began sending a series of duplicated ts. 'circular letters' to friends: the following items are all addressed to a Mr J R White of Banbury.

Becoming a company clerk in about November 1944, he took part in the advance into Burma only to be invalided out to India by February 1945, where the Battalion was also posted from April. In October he joined the headquarters of the 6th Infantry Brigade (2nd Division) and served with it in Malaya from December 1945, the last circular letter being dated March 1946.
