Description

A simurgh. Deccan, c.1650. Circumstances of acquisition unrecorded. Drawing with silver and gold; on an album page with green border. Seal of Rashid Khan, 'Alamgir Padshah Ghazi, with the date 48, probably for the 48th regnal year of Aurangzeb. 123 by 169 mm; page 162 by 240 mm. Reverse: a drawing of an Ahmadnagar prince enthroned in the countryside. A simurgh is poised in a flying attitude with wings spread, looking downwards as if about to alight.
