Administrative / biographical background

A mixed National School was built here in 1851 according to local directories. There were new buildings in 1886, when separate boys' and girls' departments were created. In 1897 the Hastings United District School Board took over the running of the school and in 1906 the trustees conveyed the site in Red Lake Road to Hastings County Borough Council. The sale price of £1,000 was used to award exhibitions to children whose parents were resident in the parish of Ore; the residue was used in the provision of religious education. The boys' section was closed in December 1925. The girls' section subsequently became a Senior Girls' School, then a Secondary Modern School and finally a Community Centre
