Description (What the record is about)
-
This collection largely consists of 16 and 17 century deeds, leases, and estate records relating to Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, with a few items from other counties. They are additional to those in the Portland of Welbeck 1st Deposit (DD/P) in Nottinghamshire Archives and contain similar material. There are records of the 17 century administration of Sherwood Forest in north Nottinghamshire, including further copies of medieval perambulations (27/6-8), and a detailed survey of the deer in 1708 (27/66-67). Contemporary records of the industrial development of this area include further records of iron furnaces or forges at Carburton (28/16-20), Clipstone (28/43-46), and Kirkby in Ashfield (28/212-213; 28/250) in Nottinghamshire as well as Barlow (28/466-73) in Derbyshire. In addition there is a detailed lease of a colliery at Jesmond near Newcastle on Tyne in 1699 (28/493), and a lease of Field Mill at Mansfield to a partnership of Nottingham hosiers for conversion to a cotton mill in 1788 (28/318-319).
A few documents (eg. 15/1) record the sale of Derbyshire property newly acquired by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 1580s; this had been formerly owned by Sir Anthony Babington of Dethick, executed for his part in the 'Babington Plot' to overthrow Queen Elizabeth in 1586, and subsequently granted by her to Raleigh.
Note that items with reference numbers in square brackets have been transferred and recatalogued with related documents in later deposits, chiefly DD/4P, and will no longer be located with their DD/2P references.

These documents relate to estates developed from the nucleus originally built up by Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury ('Bess of Hardwick') in the late 16 century, and passed down to Sir Charles Cavendish (her son by her third husband) and then to his son Sir William Cavendish, subsequently Earl and 1 Duke of Newcastle. The estates were further augmented by marriages into the Holles family (Earls of Clare) and the Harley family (Earls of Oxford), and eventually inherited by the Dukes of Portland.
